99¢ Movie: 'Ronin'
April 23rd 2008
iTunes 99¢ Movie of the Week: Ronin:
"I don't wanna see any brake lights,"director John Frankenheimer allegedly warned one actor who decided to do his own stunt driving. His comment could serve as the unofficial motto of this Hollywood veteran's final film, as well. The suspense is relentless and the heart-pounding suspense is relentless and the heart-pounding action edited with heart-surgery precision. (It's some indication of the scale of the action that 80 cars were destroyed during the production). The central car chase alone--a ballet of metal in motion--makes this movie worth watching. But add to that an intelligent script filled with memorable dialog (some secretly script-doctored by David Mamet), an emphasis on character (most of them dangerous and shadowy), and first-rate performances, and we end up with far more than just another action flick. In Frankeheimer's masterly hands, Ronin becomes a master class in how to direct a full-throttle thriller that takes its viewers on a wild ride.
