iTunes UK album sales shoot up


Quoting Official UK Charts Company data, Macworld UK reports that digital album sales grew by 69.3 percent in comparison with the first quarter of 2007. Digital single tracks also climbed 42.3 percent, year-on-year.

Thereupon, 2007 was a banner year for digital sales, with 77.96 million single tracks and 6.25 million albums sold digitally in the UK.

These numbers mirror ones reported by IGM in January showing that US 2007 digital album sales grew by 53 percent over 2006 tallies.

The record industry has complained, often bitterly, that a la carte music downloads have cannibalized album sales and caused a fundamental shift in how music is distributed while simultaneously draining revenue.

Editor's note: Notably lacking from any of the above are reasons for the growth in digital album sales. People may be filling out their personal catalogs with previously owned albums, which was a major sales driver during the transition from vinyl to CDs...
