Digital album sales way up

CNN (AP) reports that (US) digital single and album sales surged in 2007. Overall music purchases, including albums, singles, digital tracks and music videos, rose to 1.35 billion units, up 14 percent from 2006.

About 844.2 million digital tracks were legally downloaded last year, compared to 588.2 million in 2006. Digital album sales accounted for 10 percent, or 50-million units in '07 (up 53 percent), of total album purchases.

As one might expect, however, CD sales continued their inexorable decline, down 15 percent.

Editor's note: Gee, this news sounds like justification for another year of suing the be-geezus out of kids, single moms and the deceased.

A more sober reading of this data might lead one to believe that music sales may finally be turning a corner...
