O2 trims iPhone price [u]
April 15th 2008
[u]Scenta reports that O2 has slashed £100 off the price of the iPhone in an attempt to drive sales on speculation that the device has performed badly.
The operator has announced a special offer on the 8GB iPhone, which can now be purchased for £169 until the 1st June 2008.[u]
Previously, O2 burnished the plans it offers with the iPhone by increasing minutes and texts included in its £35 a month tariff to 600 minutes and 500 texts in, up from 200 and 200, respectively.
Earlier this month, T-Mobile Germany also reduced iPhone prices, offering the 8GB model with plan for €99 initial cost + €50 per month subscription.
It follows T-Mobile's decision to reduce the price of the handset from £315 to £78 in Germany.
Editor's note: It has been widely speculated that iPhone sales in Europe have lagged, with excess inventory building. These moves by T-Mobile and O2, which both end in the June timeframe, are widely seen as an effort to clear inventory ahead of new product, also expected in the June timeframe.
