Hackintosh: Can you update it?
November 29th 2007
LifeHacker is back again with fresh news of his home brew PC running OS X, aka the Hackintosh. The question he answers in his latest report answers a question you that may have occurred to you: "Can you run Apple's OS X 10.5.1 update?"
Yes, updating to 10.5.1 worked (and continues to work) very well, and if you're installing Leopard with my previous guide, it only adds a couple of extra steps. However, I did run into a snag which I'll detail later.
The extra steps involves booting from DVD and then "repatching" Leopard, a step necessary to get the Hackintosh running in the first place. Not a huge deal, but it's hard to imagine repeating these steps again and again as Apple releases fresh updates.
Moreover, down the road, there's nothing to assure LifeHacker, or anyone choosing this path, that future OS updates can be installed.
I can't imagine myself pursuing this path. Are you interested in building (and maintaining) a Hackintosh?
