The $800 MacBook cometh?

Quoting an unnamed source deemed reliable, Inquisitr claims that Apple's revised portable product line will start at $800 laptop.

Currently, Apple's least expensive model, the 2.1GHz MacBook, sells for $1,099 new and $899 refurbished.

Not so fast

Inquisitr's source claims that Apple resellers "usual get price lists 10 days before products hit the market" and that's simply not true, which doesn't add to this report's credibility.

This is the publication's second mention of the $800 price point with the first associated with their write up of the so-called brick manufacturing process.

It's been believed for some time that Apple will announce lower-priced Macs in response to falling PC prices and the growing economic downturn, though previous best guestimates put the entry-level price at $999.

Editor's note: A $799 price point (ie nobody charges exactly $800) would be a bold move for Apple and would also warrant Peter Oppenheimer's earlier warning that a product transition would hit Apple's margins.

An aggressive move on price makes sense, but the Inquisitr's source needs schooling on Apple practices in order to be convincing...
