'A lot rockier than we hoped'

Apple is circulating an email to MobileMe subscribers that apologizes for recent problems, talks about the problems at issue and extends existing subscriber accounts for 30 days.

"We want to apologize to our loyal customers and express our appreciation for their patience by giving all current subscribers an automatic 30-day extension to their MobileMe subscription free of charge. Your extension will be reflected in your account settings within the next few weeks."

Any existing .Mac subscriber on July 9 or those opened a new MobileMe account on or before July 15 will have their accounts extended.

Although Mail, iDisk, Sync, Back to My Mac, and Gallery services performed largely as advertised, Apple's new marque features--web applications and push--have been unavailable and spotty, respectively.

Editor's note: Though Apple claims otherwise, as of this writing, MobileMe homepage still doesn't offer a way to log in.
