No China iPhone talks yet?

Trading Markets reports that, contrary to rumor (Engadget), China Unicom has not been contacted by Apple regarding introduction of the iPhone.

"This rumored cooperation is nonsense," said an unnamed Unicom executive, "the company will not approach Apple at this moment when the nation's telecoms regrouping has not come to an end, let alone discuss about the iPhone deal. Because it is not clear which 3G wireless license China Unicom will get after the reshuffle."

Former China Unicom vice president Li Zhengmao previously said in an interview that the Chinese mobile service provider expected to enter into talks with Apple regarding the iPhone.

In a CNBC interview after last week's WWDC keynote address, Steve Jobs said he expects the iPhone to be officially available in China later this year.

Editor's note: By US standards, Unicom is a big player. Still, China Mobile is by far the biggest player in that market. Would China Mobile sell the current EDGE or an updated version of it there? Not offering the latest and greatest might be more trouble than it's worth...
