Top marks for service

Quoting a Consumer Reports subscriber survey, InformationWeek reports that Apple's tech support solved customer problems 80% of the time, compared to 60% on average for other vendors.

The report also single out Apple for only providing 90 days of telephone support, saying that Mac buyers should consider an Apple Care plan. Of course, if you're within driving distance of an Apple Store, support is available there for "free."

Of particular note, Consumer Reports found that Dell and Gateway were significantly better at problem-solving for customers with paid plans.

Perhaps the most ringing endorsement Consumer Reports has given Apple and the Mac came in its 2007 Vista review in which they said:

Or you can go with Apple ... Buying a Mac will get you a brand that excels in technical support and reliability.

Something to consider before buying a Dell or anything else with Windows inside...
