Mac owns high-end retail

NPD (AppleInsider) retail sales data for February indicates the Mac is selling very, very well despite the looming recession. Essentially, Apple owns the high-end of the retail market with 14 percent of units sold and a stunning 25-percent dollar share.

"Mac sales do not appear to be negatively impacted by macro environment," said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves. "[The] iMac continues to sell extremely well, with strong sales of larger screen sizes."

"Macbook Air sales appear to be additive to total sales, rather than replacing Macbook Pro sales," he continued. "We believe a new set of corporate customers make up a meaningful portion of MacBook Air buyers."

The results represent 60 percent unit growth and 67 percent revenue growth over last year even though overall US PC retail shipments grew just 9 percent on a 5 percent increase in revenues.

Editor's note: I firmly believe that Apple's got an iMac / Mac mini refresh ready to go, waiting to pull the trigger. However, with sales this good, there's been no immediate need release upgraded machines.

The redneck axiom comes to mind, "If it ain't broke... "
