iPhone: 10 million? No worries...

Fortune reports on nagging question about Apple's oft-stated 10-million unit iPhone sales goal--Do they mean in calendar 2008 or from June 29, 2007 plus all of 2008?

"We confirmed with Apple," writes Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, "that the goal is to sell 10m iPhones in CY08 alone."

Munster goes on to say that, according to his models, Apple will easily beat that target. "We are currently modeling for 12.9m iPhones in CY08," he writes. "Exceeding the goal by 2.9m units or 29 percent."

Previous analyst estimates modeled well below 10 million, but they hadn't accounted for rising sales based on future launches of the iPhone in countries where it currently isn't available.

The iPhone will go on sale in Ireland (March 14) and Switzerland (April 4) with at least a dozen other countries in play for launch this year.
