iTunes now No 2 retailer

Quoting NPD data, Associated Press (MSNBC) reports that the iTunes Store is now the No 2 music retailer in the US behind only Wal-Mart--Best Buy and Target both moved a place.

Russ Crupnick, NPD, says Apple's move to the number-two spot "fairly understandable given the pressure that's been on CDs and the almost 50-percent growth in digital downloading in the past year."

According to NPD, iTunes moved into second place due to the amount of music it sold during 2007, which was based on a 12-track CD equivalency for song downloads.

About 10 percent of music acquired in the US was through legal downloads in 2007, and consumers who bought digital music legally through pay-to-download Web sites grew by 5 million to 29 million in 2007, NPD reported.

Editor's note: Apple will be No 1 and I'm very much looking forward to the day when artists sell direct to consumers via iTunes.

I haven't purchased music on CD in at least three year. What about you?
