Apple passes on DRM alliance

Financial Times reports that NBC Universal has formed a coalition with a group of technology companies, including AT&T and Microsoft, with the aim of developing anti-piracy measures that would restrict the "illegal" transfer of copyrighted video content over the internet.

"A disproportionately large amount of [internet] traffic on our networks is peer-to-peer. The cost of that traffic is passed on to the user base," said James Cicconi, AT&T, senior vice-president, external and legal affairs. "We all have a stake in solving the [piracy] problem."

The good news for the rest of us is that Apple is believed to have refused to participate in any anti-piracy discussions with NBC.

Editor's note: Haven't we seen this silliness before? The music labels are finally surrendering to a DRM-free world. Why do the video companies think they'll fare any better?
