Apple to offer LED portable?

DigiTimes, top scat purveyor of the Orient, has published a rumor that Apple will introduce portable computers that use LEDs as their backlight source in Q2.

Of note in this otherwise workaday piece is that US (Cree) and Japanese (Nichia) suppliers likely will take the lion's share of this business because of both technical and legal concerns.

Apparently, picky product managers prefer LED-backlit displays with a brightness over 1,680 nits, which is a spec Taiwanese and Chinese makers can't hit.

Editor's note: Various sources have posited some kind of portable refresh at MWSF. This report and the fact that both the mothership's pro and consumer lines have been refreshed in recent memory would seem to mitigate against new kit at next week's show.
