Apple is replacing original MacBook Pro motherboards with a new revision which solves the 'whining' problem, according to a reader report at Macintouch.

One reader has posted the letter (73k jpeg) he received from AppleCare, which notes that OS X 10.4.6 was installed on MBPs with were still running 10.4.5. It appears the newly-revised motherboards require at least 10.4.6.

The mobo changeover reportedly gets rid of the MBP's whine. But according to Apple, the features of the MBP motherboard are identical and no additional functionality is added.

Analysis: But still no explanation. For those who believe PC industry quality has taken a nose-dive (and we're among them), the frequency with which mobos seem to get replaced is becoming almost routine.
