Apple lays off Elk Grove workers

KXTV reports and MacCentral has confirmed that Apple has laid off employees at its Laguna facility in Elk Grove, CA.

The KXTV story states that, "Employees told News10 much of the graveyard shift received pink slips when they arrived at work. There were more layoffs when the day shift arrived early this morning."

"Apple has had some minor staff reductions in the normal course of business, but our overall headcount continues to grow," MacCentral quoted Apple as saying in an official statement.

Sources say that 40 workers have already been laid off and that more pink slips may be forthcoming. However, Apple reportedly has stated the layoffs will affect less than 7 percent of its employees at Elk Grove and that overall the company is continuing to increase its head count.

Analysis: This is just a housekeeping move that could be related to the upcoming introduction of new/updated PowerMacs. No big deal.
