Mac mini hits the road

The New York Times reports that a car restorer and computer technician have joined forces to create the ultimate in-car computer system. The duo's efforts deliver music, video, internet access, phone, GPS (global-position system) and car diagnostics, and it's all based on the deceptively powerful Mac mini.

The Mac's integrated voice-recognition, 802.11g wireless and Bluetooth capabilities, as well as its low-cost, make it ideal, according to these two tinkerers.

Moreover, information about the installation posted on Clissicresto.com--run by Mr Benzaquen, the restorer--has drawn over 1-million hits. Further, he notes that volunteers worldwide had offered to write software programs to improve the Mac's automotive utility.

Editor's note: Back on Jan 22--the day the mini shipped--IGM posited that Apple's newest computer, at 6.5 x .6.5 x 2 inches, would make an ideal in-car computer system. With reality catching up with that prediction, perhaps it's just a matter of time before DIY mounting kits are available at retail?
