Last week IGM noted the arrival of NewerTech’s 2100mAh replacement Lithium-Polymer battery for all first- and second-gen iPod models. According to the company, this product provides 70-percent more capacity than a stock 1G iPod battery. With NewerTech's marketing spin in mind, XLR8 Your Mac owner Michael Breeden set out see for himself where rubber meets road using his nearly three-year-old 1G iPod (5GB): "Installing the new battery was easy [took about 5 minutes or so] using the printed guide and tools included with the battery. After charging the 2100mAh battery overnight, I ran the ... runtime test (no button presses) and the 2100mAh battery ran for 21 hours and 3 minutes." The stock battery in the Breeden's "legacy" 1G iPod was capable of four hours of continuous playback (no button pushes) and he had been planning to sell the device. It's worth noting that normal usage (searching, start, stop, etc) will result in reduced available power. But, even assuming a 50-percent reduction this upgrade will still yield over 10 hours of playback — two hours more than a 1G iPod had when it was new. The NewerTech 2100mAh Lithium-Polymer battery is available exclusively from Other World Computing (OWC). Also, if you order an iPod battery from OWC you can also get the NewerTech RoadTrip FM Transmitter for only $10 by using coupon code "HIGHROAD" at checkout. Editor's note: OWC is an IGM advertiser.
