The Omni Group has announced the introduction of OmniWeb 5.0 — a "major" new version of the only third-party web browser built exclusively for OS X. The company will be showcasing the software at Macworld Conference and Expo January 6-9 (booth No 934). A public beta version will be available for download on Feb 2 with the final version to follow in March.

"With the number of free browsers available, OmniWeb is targeted at users who truly want control over their web experience," said Ken Case, CEO. "This new version was designed to provide users with the most efficient and powerful features for interacting with web content. We're really pleased with the results, and we think our customers will be too."

Highlighted new features include a tab drawer, saved browsing sessions, updated bookmarks, page marking, improved shortcuts, site-specific preferences, etc.

OmniWeb 5.0 is tagged at $30 and upgrades will sell for $10.

Safari 1.2 coming...

Think Secret reports that Safari 1.2 is in the offing. The top added feature is expected to be the ability to navigate and use forms without using the mouse -- one of the nicer features of Windows' browsers.

Editor's note: OmniWeb is based on the same open-source Web and Java engines used by Apple in Safari. It appears that this third-party browser is moving to add features and differentiate itself from Safari. Competition is good.
