Apple offers trade in program for third-party USB chargers

Recent reports have suggested that some counterfeit and third party adapters may not be designed properly and could result in safety issues. While not all third party adapters have an issue, we are announcing a USB Power Adapter Takeback Program to enable customers to acquire properly designed adapters.

People can drop off a suspect charger at an Apple retail store or independent reseller and Apple will dispose of the the product. Customers looking to exchange third-party chargers can do so for $10. The program runs from August 16th through October 18th.

Apple gets a lot of crap about placing restrictions on non-Apple solutions The issue is whenever something bad happens related to an Apple product, it makes headlines blaming Apple. Such as when someone got electrocuted using a faulty third-party power adapter on their iPhone.
