Mac support coming to AT&T remote access

Mac users will be able to connect to AT&T Broadband at anytime from anywhere -- later, not now. The Remote Access service gives those using a PC a dial-up connection so that they can check email and surf when they are not connected via their cable modem.

"Our goal is to offer our customers maximum flexibility with their AT&T Broadband Internet connection," said Karl Ossentjuk, vice president, AT&T Broadband. "We're pleased to offer our [PC] customers this valuable Remote Access tool so that when they're away from their cable connection they can still reach the Internet with PeoplePC's reliable and quality dial-up service."

For a one-time $10 registration fee, PC users receive two hours of dial-up access each month. Customers can purchase additional connection time on an as-needed basis. As users approach the two-hour limit included in the registration fee, they are asked if they want to purchase additional dial-up time. Customers can purchase an extra 10 hours for $5.99 per month. Or, customers can receive unlimited connection time for $10.99 per month.

"Broadband users want the benefits of high-speed access as well as the flexibility to take the Internet with them when they're away from home," said Nick Grouf, CEO, PeoplePC. "PeoplePC's robust dial up service gives AT&T Broadband customers the freedom to stay connected wherever they are through our extensive network of local access numbers."

The Remote Access service is currently available only for PC users. AT&T Broadband is working to develop a solution to support Macintosh users.

Editor's note: With all of the Windoze network support built into Jaguar, it seems exceedingly odd that the 5 to 10 percent of us who've made the switch can't have access right now. It probably has more to do with a lack of Mac-trained personnel at PeoplePC (what a ridiculous name) than any technical issues. Politics as usual? What's your take?
