iPhone, iPod touch share up 50%?

Whether you're reading web usage market share data or revenue figures from developers, one thing's becoming clear about this holiday shopping season--the iPod touch is a hit. Although traditional iPods in their various shapes and sizes surely delivered higher unit volume, Apple's ultra-mobile computer (that isn't also a phone) is the must-have gift this year.

How do we know? Well, we don't and Apple's unlikely to tell us directly. Still, the tea leaves and runes available all yield the same conclusion.

For example, on December 25th, Net Applications data shows Mobile OS X share increased by more than 50% from its one month average of 0.458 to 0.69 percent. Further, if you crunch the numbers from Christmas Eve through yesterday you get a new baseline average of 0.632%.

Add to this story iPhone / touch developer sales anecdotes collected by MacRumors. iFart Mobile says it saw sales triple to 39,000 units on Christmas Day, while TouchArcade also reported a sales boost of 3X to 4X, depending on title.

But don't these numbers also likely include iPhone data, too? Yup, however the zeitgeist points to the touch as the source of these massive spikes, not the iPhone, and so does this Net Applications, which breaks out iPod touch web usage.

Lastly, there are likely millions who want an iPhone, but can't afford its high total cost of ownership, which is a bit shy of $2,000 over the course of two years. Thereupon, the iPod touch is more than a close substitute--it's the best possible choice...
