Amazon's best year ever... [u]


Amazon has announced the 2008 holiday season finished as its best ever, with over 6.3-million items ordered worldwide on the peak day, Dec 15, which is a record-breaking 72.9 items per second.

"We are extremely grateful to our customers," said Jeff Bezos, CEO. "We wish everyone happy holidays and the very best for the coming year."

Amazon Worldwide 2008 (worldwide) holiday facts include:

Amazon shipped to over 210 countries

On the peak day this season, Amazon's worldwide fulfillment network shipped over 5.6 million units

Amazon shipped more than 99 percent of orders in time to meet holiday deadlines worldwide

8GB iPod touch and Acer Aspire One 8.9-inch netbook were among the stop sellers

Microsoft Office, both Mac and PC version, were among the top sellers in software

Amazon has yet to announce dollars sales figures. It's widely believed that this holiday shopping season has been good to Apple, as well, with Macs and iPods topping Amazon's top seller categories for weeks.

[u] In related news, News.com reports the latest online retail spending data released by ComScore shows that consumers last weekend spent almost double what they spent on the corresponding weekend before Christmas last year. US consumers online spent $677 million last weekend, Dec 20 and 21, compared to $341 million the weekend before Christmas in 2007, which was Dec 22 and 23. [u]
