GlobeSurfer III router does 3G


Nova Media has announced the release of the GlobeSurfer III, a wireless gateway for connecting to and sharing (802.11g) a 3G wireless network connection. Within a local network GlobeSurfer III supports WLAN connections with up to 54 Mbit/s and Ethernet connections with up to 1000 Mbit/s.

"The Router uses a webinterface for configuration and offers a setup wizard for an easy start.", states Jan Fuellemann, PR spokesperson. "GlobeSurfer III supports all relevant encryptions and features a preconfigured firewall. An expert mode allows a user-defined configuration."

Further, there's a built-in USB 2.0 port for sharing a connected hard drive or printer. In addition, a standard telephone can be hooked up to the router to make and receive calls using the mobile network.

And, lastly, an external antenna can be attached to boost signal reception in remote areas.

The Nova GlobeSurfer III is priced at €285 ($366) and requires OS X 10.3.9 or higher.

Editor's note: Brilliant product with a built in market, but it's way too expensive to spread beyond the executive crowd.

That said, whether it's WiMax, 3G or some wireless phone network that ultimately prevails isn't relevant, the US needs to spread broadband to every corner of the country.

How should the US pursue building out broadband to rural and other isolated areas? I've believed for some time that a 21st Century variant of the REA (Rural Electrification Act) is what's needed...
