Apple Watch may gain dedicated sleep tracking features

A new report suggests Apple is looking to build in sleep tracking features into future Apple Watches.

Bloomberg:

The company has been using the sleep-tracking feature for several months with testers at secret sites around its Cupertino, California, headquarters, according to people familiar with the work. If the functionality is successful in the testing stages, the company plans to add it to the Apple Watch by 2020, according to one of the people.

Apple acquired sleep tracking company Beddit in 2017, so it seems Apple recognizes the importance of sleep tracking with wearables. Sleep tracking is a feature of Fitbit and other competing products.

The Apple Watch can be used with third-party apps and Apple's HealthKit. The catch is you need to wear the watch overnight when many use that time to charge their devices. Future devices may have improved battery performance or be compelling enough to wear the watch overnight and charge at a later time.
