Security research demonstrates how to hack into Mac camera

Security researcher and former NSA staffer Patrick Wardle (Via 9 to 5 Mac):

After examining various 'webcam-aware' OS X malware samples, the research will show a new 'attack' that would allow such malware to stealthily monitor the system for legitimate user-initiated video sessions, then surreptitious piggyback into this in order to covertly record the session. As there are no visible indications of this malicious activity (as the LED light is already on), the malware can record both audio and video without fear of detection.

The key thing here is the snooping only occurred during an active session. The camera light on Macs are controlled by firmware, which would be a much more difficult hack, reportedly. That may gives some comfort knowing that no one is likely watching if the little green light isn't lit. At least until someone figures that out.
