This RAID project has been a work in progress for over three months. In making this
RAID, I've researched the best possible solution to put together a disk array for
my Mac. Rather than buying a box off the shelf, I chose to buy the parts separately
and build it myself. With the help of a number of vendors and web sites, I've created
quite the disk array for my Mac.
When I first started looking at RAIDs, I vaguely knew what was involved in setting
up a disk array and the technology behind it. In the review, I walk through the hardware,
software, and issues involved in picking out and setting up a RAID. This review has
all the resources needed to build your own disk array for your Mac.
This whole project was rather daunting, and it couldn't have been done without the
help of a number of people in the Mac community.
I want to thank the people at MacGurus
who took the time to explain what all this stuff does, and how to make the best RAID
possible. MacGurus in part is sponsoring this project by taking some of the cost
out of the RAID. MacGurus graciously offered to pick up the cost for the active terminator
and the remote LED monitor.
Also the people at Other World Computing
is in part sponsoring the project. They have graciously picked up the cost for two
of the four hard drives used in the project.
Both MacGurus and Other World Computing are offering discounts for Insanely Great
Mac readers who are interested in building or upgrading their own RAID. Both vendors
are offering a unique solution to upgrading your disk system.
Finally, I want to recognize Michael Breeden from Accelerate
Your Mac. Mike has made a great resource for anyone looking to seriously
upgrade his or her Mac. His site is an unbelievable resource that helped me in my
quest to put this thing together.
