When it comes to podcasts, the folks at NPR offer a broad, eclectic and timely selection of programs to go—life is all the better for it.

However, the black hole in the midst of this cornicopia has been real-time content.

Now our friends at American Public Media have filled the yawning gap in the iPhone / iPod touch software repertoire keeping us from All Things Considered, Morning Edition and other as-they-happen favorites—the Public Radio Tuner (iTunes via TUAW).

Wanna listen to Car Talk live on WBUR? Gotcha covered.

How about KCRW All News channel and its measured mix of BBC, PRI and NPR programming? Absolutely.

All told, American Public Media's Public Radio Tuner offers 150 stations, though you'll need a healthy 3G or wifi connection (varies by station) to listen in.

The big omission from this app? The same thing that's missing from every other internet radio and steaming audio app on the iPhone and iPod touch—background processing.

Still, it's great to finally have NPR at the ready...

KCRW is da bomb. Don't really care for National Petroleum Radio content, though.
