Another OS X-compatible trojan appears
November 21st 2008
Trend Micro has announced that one their researchers has discovered a new trojan design to prey on Mac users--OSX_LAMZEV.A.
According to their write up, this malware can be used to open a backdoor that evil people could exploit to take control of a Mac. Of course, as is always the case with a trojan, OS_LAMZEV.A requires the active participation of the user:
• When executed, OSX_LAMZEV.A prompts users to select an application and a port above 1024. These are Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) registered ports and are used by vendors for proprietary applications.
Once installed, OS_LAMZEV.A will run every time an infected Mac starts up. However, Trend Micro's description doesn't make it clear whether a user needs to run a specific program (see above) or whether this trojan goes automagical once fully installed.
Earlier this week, Intego noted the appearance of a new variant of the RSPlug.A trojan.
Naturally, both Trend Micro and Intego want you to pay for their software in order to obviate any threat these trojans might present. A better idea? Download, install and run clamXav, and donate a tenner to the cause...
What's your take?
