Fring gets legal
October 6th 2008
Fring (the company) has announced that Fring (the application) is now available from the iTunes AppStore.
Fring (the application) is a VOIP client for Skype and other internet phone networks that was previously only useable on a jailbroken iPhone and iPod touch.
And, what do we call the friends / colleagues / etc one interacts with while using the software (Get a bucket, bin or trash can 'cause you'll need something to barf in)? We call them "fringsters."
Inane marketing aside, Fring brings free and / or really cheap calling to the platform and that is a good thing™.
What's different about Fring?
Apple's blocked good things in the past because they purportedly compete either with Apple or AT&T. Why is Fring on the AppStore and NetShare isn't?
That said, aside from tethering, what if any killer apps are only available via a jailbroken iPhone?
If Apple provided just a little more iPhone functionality (ie tethering), they would force the jailbreaking community to either fish (ie develop for the AppStore) or cut bait (bugger off).
What's your take?
