nVidia IS exiting chipset biz [u]

When IGM reported on Friday that nVidia was quitting the chipset biz, the company's top marketing wonk, Brian Burke, quickly appeared to disclaim any such plans.

"We're looking forward to bringing new and very exciting MCP products to the market for both AMD and Intel platforms," said Burke in a statement made available to DailyTech, a technology publication.

Today, however, Charlie Demerjian of the The Inquirer states, marketing department protestations aside, nVidia's chipset division is indeed "a thing of the past."

Recently, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang met with the company's Taiwanese and Chinese motherboard business partners and asked them if there was any reason nVidia should stay in the chipset business. None of collective mobo makers or their minions spoke up and it was a done deal.

Demerjian notes, however, plans to kill off the division doesn't mean no more chipsets effective immediately--products already for sale, and those nearly finished will be completed, will continue to be available. No timeline for nVidia's exit has been provided by either The Inquirer or DigiTimes, source of the original report.

Earlier today, IGM reported on the faulty-by-design nVidia graphics chips used in current MacBook Pro models.

[u] DigiTimes reports that nVidia has released an official statement that the company has no intention of leaving the chipset business. The disclaimer / information provided appears to be the same as IGM reported last Friday. DigiTimes doesn't provide a source or link for the statement. [u]

Editor's note: Cleaning up after management when it runs roughshod over written company PR policies and announced product development plans is never fun.

This news should put an end to any speculation that Apple planned to use next-gen nVidia chipset technologies in upcoming MacBook revision...
