Apple Stores opening at 8am [u]

With demand for the 3G iPhone still high, Apple is taking steps at its retail outlets to ameliorate the long lines and store crowding.

Here's the spin from the company's retail iPhone availability page:

To accommodate demand for iPhone 3G, all Apple Retail Stores will now open at 8:00am every day but Sunday. We're also adding staff to help you get up and running as quickly as possible.

As of this writing, according to Top Muffin's iPhone availability tracker only two Apple Stores have no stock of the handset, with 185 of 190 US locations saying they have the 16GB white model.

[u] iPodObserver reports that Apple Stores began using voucher system on Saturday to help streamline the 3G iPhone 3G purchases. The voucher tickets ensures customers queueing outside will have the correct iPhone waiting for them whence they get in the store.[u]

Editor's note: iPhone buyers being a motivated bunch are being "encouraged" to arrive at store early, giving the company two hours--Apple Stores and most of their retail neighbors usually open at 10am--to sell out of the day's allotment of handsets and then spend the rest of the day serving its "other" customers.

Smart...
