Mac share hits record

April's dip erased and then some. Safari maintains recent growth trend

When IGM last checked, the Mac's share of online traffic had retreated to 7.01% in April from 7.48% in March—an apparent anomaly in the face of surging Mac sales last quarter.

As it's the first of June, Net Applications has published data for May. Their numbers indicate that Mac users now account for 7.83% of traffic measured—a rise of over 0.82% over our last report.

Also of note is the fact that iPhone usage rose in May to 0.16% from 0.14% in April. Apple's zeitgeist-defining handset experienced a small share decline in the April to March period, as well, falling 0.01% month-to-month.

The iPhone ranks fourth on Net Applications OS market share list.

On the browser front, Firefox, Safari and Opera all posted gains at the expense of Netscape, which is no longer being updated, and Internet Explorer.

Net Application's Top 5 looks like this:

01 Internet Explorer—73.75% (76.02)
02 Firefox—18.41% (16.96)
03 Safari—6.25% (5.51)
04 Opera—0.71% (0.65)
05 Netscape—0.62% (0.55)

A potential fly in the ointment for Apple's cross-platform Safari, which has posted strong gains among Windows users in recent months, is the appearance of the carpet bomb attack—Apple has said it won't issue a patch for the issue.

Editor's note: If one ignores April's numbers, down nearly a half percent from March, the Mac shows a continuous growth trajectory. Likewise the iPhone.
