The Usual Suspects, the iTunes 99¢ Movie of the Week:
There are a handful of movies that demand a second viewing--because they're so good or because a surprise ending give every scene a new meaning when it's watched a second time. The Usual Suspects is both. The acting is top-notch (Kevin Spacey won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) and the Oscar-winning screenplay out performs the performers. Nothing is what it seems in this convoluted crime caper and the smart script requires attention to even the smallest of details (notes on a bulletin board, the imprint on a coffee cup, a lighter). Additionally, there's an abundance of violence and obscenity, plenty of suspense, and plot twists galore (including the mind-bending ending). What we end up with is a cross between Reservoir Dogs and Rashomon--whose version of the murders can you believe?
