.Mac 'push' email coming to iPhone

In the waning days of March, IGM reported that various tell tale .Mac bits had been found inside the iPhone SDK. Since then, this item has been, to a degree, forgotten with all the talk of Mobile Doom, Chinese character recognition, etc.

Of course, adding .Mac to the iPhone's "it just works" walled garden is a natural progression that neatly fits Apple's modus operandi.

TUAW has a report based on a reader tip that Apple hasn't forgotten about iPhone / .Mac integration and is in fact building that functionality as we speak:

A certain, unnamed individual sent us some pictures of the latest build of the iPhone firmware showing .Mac push e-mail. The picture shows the main Settings page with a new button: "Fetch new data." When you click the button, you are taken to a list of your mail accounts, where you can choose between either "fetch" or "push."

Email is nice, but the killer application for many .Mac users is anywhere back up and access to address book, calendar, preferences, etc. I hope Apple's building that in, too...
