NIN: The future of music?

Nine-Inch-Nails has released its first new album since summarily dumping its label and it's a whopper. Ghosts I - IV is a brand-new, 36-track instrumental collection offering nearly two hours of music recorded over 10 weeks last Fall.

"I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point," said Trent Reznor. "This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective--dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams.

"I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference," he continued. "I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."

Ghosts is available immediately as a $10 download, including 40 pages of liner notes. A two-CD set (will ship April 8) can be purchased for $10 and "deluxe" packages (will ship May 1), including (4) 180-gram vinyl albums, are available from $75.

Lastly, Ghosts I is available for "free" (nine tracks) in DRM-free, mp3 format.

Editor's note: Without "interference?" That's clearly a reference the band's former record label, which was summarily dumped.

The first four volumes? Dude's obviously taking a page from Prince's playbook here.

And, $10 for the whole kid-and-kabootle DRM-free? Who frickin' needs a record label...
