On a 'phishing' Safari

Quoting PayPal CIO Michael Barrett, Macworld UK reports that Safari's lack of security features make it an avoidable risk vis-a-vis phishing.

"Apple, unfortunately, is lagging behind what they need to do, to protect their customers," Barrett said in an interview. "Our recommendation at this point, to our customers, is use ... Firefox 2 or Firefox 3, or indeed Opera."

Specifically, Safari doesn't make PayPal's list of recommended browsers because it doesn't have two important anti-phishing security features--no built-in phishing filter to warn users when they are visiting suspicious sites and a lack of support for another anti-phishing technology, called Extended Validation (EV) certificates.

It's rumored that Apple will soon Safari 3.1, though anti-phishing isn't among the reported features.

Editor's note: Has anyone actually been a victim or is this another case of a potential threat? The self-selected guardians of security often have difficulty separating the two.

Regardless, Apple needs to respond...
