All hail Blu-ray


Quoting Japan's NHK, Reuters reports that Toshiba is planning to stop HD DVD production, leaving the field to Sony and its Blu-ray format.

As a result, Toshiba is expected to lose tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars).

The death blow in the Blu-ray vs HD DVD format war came this week when Wal-Mart and NetFlix announced they were dropping HD.

Editor's note: This is perhaps a hollow victory. It's entirely plausible that increasingly ubiquitous broadband will fuel both legal (iTunes + Apple TV) and illegal downloads, neutering physical media sales...
