MBA multi-touch is software

Quoting an unnamed Apple spokesperson, T3 reports that the MacBook Air's multi-touch track pad is software based and not tied to hardware.

This means that rather than having to lash out on a new lappie to have access to all that touch-based goodness, owners of standard MacBooks and MacBook Pros could potentially download an update to give their kit a multitouch makeover.

With this information now public, I suspect it's just a matter of time before some clever coder creates a utility / preference panel that delivers this multi-touch with gestures.

It's worth noting, of course, that updated MacBook Pros--any day now--are expected to include multi-touch.

Editor's note: How useful would gesturing be on the MacBook's smaller touch pad? Good or bad, it's going to be a lot cheaper than a new notebook...

What's your take?
