Please, let HD be dead

BBC reports that Best Buy and NetFlix have thrown considerable weight behind Sony's next-gen optical-disc technology, Blu-ray.

"Best Buy has always believed that the customer will benefit from a widely accepted single format that would offer advantages such as product compatibility and expanded content choices," said Best Buy president and chief operating officer Brian Dunn. "Because we believe that Blu-ray is fast emerging as that single format, we have decided to focus on Blu-ray products."

For its part, NetFlix said the shift by Hollywood studios--Walt Disney, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Brothers and MGM--has prompted it to reconsider its policy of carrying both HD and and Blu-ray.

Currently, only Paramount and Universal Studios offer titles on HD.

Apple reportedly recommitted to Blu-ray in January, though the drives have yet to appear in actual shipping products.

Editor's note: Please, HD be dead. Then again, with already going iPod and web, perhaps physical media isn't relevant long-term...
