iPhone 1.1.3 changes things

A Nate True blog post on Cre.ations details under-the-hood changes in iPhone 1.1.3:

SpringBoard no longer needs to be modified (via SummerBoard) in order to show extra applications in the /Applications folder
All applications now run as the user 'mobile' instead of as root
Preferences are now stored in /var/mobile rather than in /var/root

According to Nate, this means that Phone 1.1.3 firmware is ready for official installable applications, making the device easier for official SDK developers to create programs.

Of course, iPhone 1.1.3 breaks many of the "unofficial" existing applications, though not all.

Previously, Insanely-Great Mac reported that an iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak has been finished, but won't be released until the SDK ships at the end of February.

Editor's note: Apps will no longer run as root--that's fairly profound--and the hackers are girding their code (loins?) for this eventuality...
