Macworld blooms again

New York Times reports that this year's Macworld San Francisco attracted 55,000 attendees, about 10,000 more than last year.

Likewise, there were 475 exhibitors at this year's event--about 100 more than 2007.

All of this is expected given surging Mac sales, which analysts say grew to 2.16-million units last quarter, a rise of 30 percent or twice the industry average.

Psst!

Of course, there's one thing that Macworld generates in great quantities--buzz. Despite the fact that it's not easy to statistically measure and there was evidently less of it this year, Macworld '08 buzz needs to be viewed in context.

Though some think Apple's Air, iPhone / touch, Time Capsule and movie rental announcements left much to be desired, Macworld delivered in spades compared this year's utterly anemic CES show--the world's so-called premier electronics show.

In fact, I think it's safe to say CES 2008 was less relevant than Macworld 2007. Yes, there were some cool widgets display recently in Lost Wages, but there's a strong likelihood that none of those "new" technologies will take off until they've been blessed by Apple (ie USB, digital music, mp3 players, wi-fi, smart phones, etc).

So, although not a superlative year, this year's Macworld did deliver. Nevertheless, how many of us are really satisfied...
