Netscape is dead [long live Firefox]!

Bloomberg reports that AOL has pulled the plug on Netscape. From Feb 1, support for Netscape will cease, though the browser will continue to be available for download.

"AOL's focus on transitioning to an ad-supported Web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be," said Tom Drapeau, director, Netscape.

When Microsoft launched Internet Explorer in 1995, Netscape claimed 80 percent of the market. AOL purchased Netscape in 1999 for $9.8 billion.

Editor's note: Sentiment aside, does Netscape's demise matter now that Firefox is so capable?
