525,000 iPhones Sold in First Weekend

Reuters reports that Apple has sold an estimated 525,000 iPhones since Friday, June 29, according to Piper Jaffrey.

Wired's estimates were somewhat lower, coming in at 200,000-plus for the opening weekend of sale, courtesy of a Global Equities analyst. Sales at this level would mean around $130 million gross.

However, Apple has not released official figures. But many AT&T and Apple Retail Stores quickly ran out of stock during the furious rush for the iPhone that started Friday night.

If nothing else, that explains the difficulties some users experienced activating their iPhone. It appears from comments of AT&T workers that even the cell company wasn't expecting the avalanche of enquiries it fielded, despite putting masses of extra staff on for the opening weekend of sales.
