Storage: You can do it, OWC can help
April 8th 2007
A couple weeks back I was presented with an offer I couldn't refuse--a 300GB HDD for next to nothing. It was an impulse buy, a clearance item in a dump bin by the cash register.
However, when buying I hadn't considered the fact that none of my current FireWire enclosures were actually capable recognizing 300GB--silly me.
Further, after realizing my mistake I did a quick survey of the area computer retailers--Circuit City, Staples, Best Buy, etc--only to find zero selection and high prices, not to mention the usual know-nothings ("Hey, Bob, does FireWire work with Macs?") staffing the aisles.
OWC Neptune to the rescue!
And, here's just how easy it really is to put together a roll-your-own Neptune ($37.50) external storage solution from OWC:
• Unpack it
• Get ready
• Wire it
• Secure it
• Reassemble 1
• Reassemble 2
• Plug it and initialize it using Apple's Disk Utility--it's free, brain-dead easy and located in the Utilities folder of whatever version of the OS X you're using.
The only tools you'll need are a phillips-head screw driver and a modicum of common sense.
Do you have an OWC upgrade success story you'd like to share?
