Next-Gen iPod Video to Feature Flash, Wireless?

Is Apple going to jettison the HD-based iPod Video and make the entire range flash-based? Some analysts think so, and it may happen as soon as the end of this year, the International Business Times reports.

Like the iPhone, the 6G iPod would have a large screen, touchscreen technology, GPS, wireless (like Zune) and, possibly, internet connectivity.

GPS would be a major leap forward; some analysts think it could make the iPod a digital hub in itself, giving wireless access to digital content, such as audio tracks and movies. It could, potentially, be integrated with the GPS systems already built into many cars.

Moving the range entirely to flash-based storage would also be a major move. Nevertheless, hard drives are far cheaper and more capacious. But flash uses less battery power and is also less likely to be damaged if dropped, for example.

Analysis: Flash prices will need to fall a lot more on a per-GB basis. The 8GB Nano costs the same as a 30GB iPod with Video. Sure, Apple can drive prices down by ordering in volume. We also think that the spec sheet looks a little too like the iPhone. After all, Apple don't want iPod eating into iPhone market share by offering too many features.
