Digitimes reports that Apple's Q2 notebook shipments rose 60% over the year-ago corresponding quarter, based on data gathered by IDC and Gartner. Apple's worldwide portable computer market share rose to 4% during the second quarter as a consequence, a 2-year high. The release of the 13.3" consumer MacBook, which complemented Apple's MacBook Pro Intel-based line of notebooks, drove the growth, with the MacBook proving particularly popular. The news was less positive on desktops, with the now-superseded Power Macintosh G5 systems falling 20% compared to the year-ago quarter. Analysts continue to predict that Apple will release Merom-based MacBooks in Q3 and the company is likely to cut prices on current Yonah-based portables to reduce inventories as new models come on stream.
