PCs: 1 Billion and Counting

The PC has reached a milestone - 1 billion of them have now been shipped worldwide, according to a study by the Gartner Group.

A number of statistics on sales and the types of PCs sold are quoted in the report by ZDNet. According to the Gartner study, 38% of all PCs have been sold in the US, while 75% have gone into business/education environments. 81% of PCs shipped have been desktops. Only around 2% have been servers.

The study includes a brief recap of the history of the Altair, Zenith and Apple PCs.

The next billion will be less time in coming: around 2008, according to the report.

Analysis: We'd predict that the ratio of notebooks to desktops will alter substantially over the next billion. And we wonder how many of those billion bear an Apple logo.
