Quoting a report by Taiwanese research outfit Topology Research Institute, Taipei Times states that Apple is expected to outpace brand-name notebook makers in the year ahead. Our favorite fruit company is projected to ship 3.27 million iBooks and PowerBooks, an increase of 42 percent compared to 2.29 million units in '05.

If these numbers hold true, the mothership will add nearly a full percentage point of portable market share from 3.9 to 4.7 percent.

"Compared to other makers, which will post only moderate growth, Apple's performance is significant and worth paying attention to," Topology analyst Simon Yang said.

Mssr Yang continued by saying that the company will unveil light-weight models with a stylish design aimed at luring female users. The upcoming Apple lineup will include 12-inch notebooks weighing in at 3.3lbs, as well as 14-inch models below 4.4lbs.

Previously, IGM has reported rumors indicating Apple would release fresh portables at Macworld San Francisco and that one of the models released may be a 13.3-inch widescreen iBook. Subnotebook rumors have also circulated.

Editor's note: Up pops a previously unknown think tank to add weight to the MacIntel at MWSF rumors. Perhaps Apple's just getting too big to effectively guard its secrets.

Then again, the nano was a surprise...
