AFP reports that Sony has engaged Apple in talks with the aim of launching a new digital download service. This move comes in the wake of a revolt by Japanese artists signed with the label. However, Sony is spinning their attempt to save face in an entirely different light: "We are negotiating with Apple over the download business and hope to expand our customer base to iPod users," said Yasuhi Ide, a spokesman for Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. "We simply want iPod users to listen to our music." As reported by AFP, a Sony-Apple music service could begin as early as next year. It is, however, much more likely that the two companies are negotiating the release of Sony artist material via the iTunes Music Store, which has outsold Sony's online store in Japan by an embarrassingly large margin. Editor's note: AFP is infamous for the poor quality of their reporting and editing, which is said by some to be even worse than certain Mac news websites. Viva la difference!
